The Chick-fil-A Squabble is Not a First Amendment Issue

THIS is why our schools need to teach this stuff.

Here we go again, folks. Every once in a while, a public figure states an opinion about a political issue. Then some people object. Then other people object to the first bunch. Then millions of Americans whip themselves into a colossal panic, whining about their “First Amendment Rights”. And they’re wrong.

Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy said in July that he opposes same sex marriage and supports organizations that share his views. Boston and Chicago Mayors Thomas Menino and Rahm Emmanuel said that they don’t want his stores in their cities.

Then a bunch of people with nothing better to do bought chicken sandwiches that they didn’t really want, and others who did want sandwiches stopped buying them. And each group thought that the others were violating their “rights”. Sorry, folks. It doesn’t work that way.

  1. Absolutely true Pat but there is an underlying danger that precedents with the Citizens case where the S.Ct declared corporations as peopole with a politicalvoice the danger us state sponsored religiion. In other words, Corporations are regulated by the state in which they reside; the important thing in Chic-fil-A case is where Cathy said his remark, was it on his premises or in a parking lot where in introduced himself not just his name but his identity. If he is speaking as CEO and it is the postion of the Corporation itself and therefore representative of the state, that is a big no no. This was never a first amendment right, but as you said people out there are so misinformed or uninformed and at best confused as to anything with a political meaning. They seem to have lost their history or are just surface thinking and reacting to what they see on the surface. This is a great post Pat and I will share it on my FB page. Thank you so much for alerting the poeple as it is much needed now. Also an aside, and as you well know Pat, in America we once had a healthy and cooperative capitalism that has dissapeared in recent times. Now take Chic-fil-A, open for business and touting that they made millions and have opened 16 locations, but the press reported that they hired only 100 people for those 16 units. That is six people per unit from morning to closing time; 1/3 of what other fast food chains hire for their individual units. As you may recall, the press shown photographs of long long lines waiting to be served and mentioned ti took hours to get waited on. That is why! Can you imaginine those poor kids just entering the job market what their attitudes will be after that day. Here they are these beautiful fresh faces trying hard as they can to do a good job where it would be impossible. Those poor kids must have been so overworked and so tired. Cathy is no more than a greedy hard core capitalist exploting the young and using the bilble and religion as a sales pitch. Has anyone checked out if in fact he is Catholic, I don’t think so. That is what we must focus on. We want to take back our country, well it’s also got to include our once upon a time honest business with fair labor practices.
